Steiermark

2 bottles in this region

Nestled in the southeastern corner of Austria, Steiermark presents a captivating tapestry of rolling hills and verdant vineyards, its terroir sculpted by a unique confluence of continental and Mediterranean influences. The soils here vary significantly, ranging from calcareous marl in the southern volcanic hills to granite and slate in the cooler northern areas, imbuing its wines with remarkable diversity. This geological mosaic, coupled with distinct microclimates influenced by warm Pannonian air and cool Alpine breezes, allows for the cultivation of grapes that express both freshness and profound character. Historically, viticulture in Steiermark traces its roots back to Roman times, with a resurgence of winemaking in the Middle Ages under the patronage of monasteries. However, it was the late 20th century that truly defined the region's modern identity, marked by a collective commitment to quality. Steiermark is now celebrated for its crisp, aromatic white wines, with Sauvignon Blanc and Welschriesling standing as its emblematic varieties. The latter, often mistaken for its Italian namesake, flourishes here, producing delightful, sometimes off-dry wines, while Sauvignon Blanc from areas like Südsteiermark (South Styria) rivals the best from the Loire Valley. What truly distinguishes Steiermark is its dedication to showcasing purity of fruit and a distinct sense of place, often referred to as "terroir." Winemakers are committed to minimal intervention, allowing the vineyard to speak through the glass. This focus on authenticity is perhaps best encapsulated by the region's famous "Schilcher" wine, a unique rosé made from the indigenous Blauer Wildbacher grape. Legend has it that Napoleon's troops, during their occupation, were so charmed by the vibrant pink hue and tart berry notes of this wine that they dubbed it "Rosé de la Belle Alliance" – a testament to its enduring allure.
