Legend suggests that a visiting wine merchant once attempted to plant a small, sheltered nursery of Riesling vines near the Bowmore distillery, hoping the maritime humidity would mirror the Rhine. The experiment failed within two seasons, not due to the cold, but because the local islanders humorously insisted that the vines were "too sober" to grow on Islay. The site was promptly reclaimed by the peat, and the merchant reportedly toasted his failure with a glass of 12-year-old single malt, conceding that the land was destined to produce fire rather than fruit.
